Takayama is an outstanding town to visit and Minshuku Kuwataniya is centrally located for exploring the fascinating old town. Of five places we stayed in on our Japan holiday, this was the most traditionally Japanese, although we opted for Western style beds. With one window looking out to a temple across the street, our room was reasonably spacious and well equipped, including a very good bathroom and good wifi. Speaking only a little English, the staff were very unobtrusive, responding when we needed them but otherwise invisible. One of us being gluten intolerant, we needed to find suitable restaurants and within ten minutes walk there were three excellent ones, Sakurajaya (to die for), Heianraku and Thanyaporn (Thai). Perhaps the staff could have offered more help in our choice of restaurants, as we had to work out for ourselves where to go. Our room lacked a kettle for making tea and coffee, instead having a thermos flask full of hot water, fresh each day.
