Stayed at Gyokushoen Arai, Izu Peninshula, Shizuoka Pref.

The people there are an interesting bunch and compliment the character. Don't expect the robotically perfect staff of a Tokyo hotel. This little inn seems to be part of the local community. Sometimes sleepy and not a soul around and at others a busy hive. Be prepared for using narrow stairs alot. The private bath is very good and is exclusive. Good for privacy bad if you have an important dinner and it's in use. Breaky is ok but small. Overall a memorable experience.

Such an amazing place to stay. They put us on the top floor overlooking the river. Best room we have had so far on our trip. The staff was so nice. "You are so tall, that is so cool".

Stayed at Hotel Shirakabaso, Shiga Kogen, Nagano

This place was amazing from the owners who were extremely welcoming and even gave us a lift to the monkey park as it was quite late when we arrived to the building itself which is impressive in it's character. We can not recommend this place more highly. The surrounding area is also impressive and if you get the opportunity then I would highly recommend the 45 minute walk back to Yudanaka from the monkey park.

Perfect service, top location in the middle of Kinosaki with different onsen which 5 minutes walk made this warm and friendly guest house to our top stay in Japan. Thank you for this good experience.

The room looked very traditional and had everything needed for modern comfort. The hotel is very easy to reach from the station. Most, temple and museum are within walking distance. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They often suggested new places for us to visit. The traditional breakfast was delicious.
